Baby Huey was rescued from a feral colony in Summerland. At six weeks of age, he weighed only 0.16kg; he was one third the size of his siblings! He was severely malnourished and dehydrated and there simply wasn’t much hope for his survival… until… he was rescued as part of the Feral Kitten Rescue Program at Critteraid!
Program Director December Foster fell in love with Huey immediately. He was listless and exhausted, but December bottle-fed him kitten formula, which he took greedily, and he perked up a little bit. Later that day, Huey’s mother was also trapped and she came to stay in foster care to await getting spayed and vaccinated. December reunited the two cats in a large dog crate and Huey’s mama took him back immediately. Huey seemed pretty happy to see her again!
But that night after December went to bed, Huey’s mother decided she didn’t want anything to do with Huey anymore and cast him away to the far end of the crate. December awoke at 5am to blood curdling kitten screams and went to see what was the matter. Poor Huey was listless and freezing, lying alone in the dark. December whisked him out of the crate, wrapped him in warm blankets and tried to give him some more milk, but he was too exhausted to eat.
The minute the veterinary clinic opened in the morning, December drove Huey there, his tiny, cold body wrapped in a pink fuzzy blankie. The wonderful staff at Lindsey Vet Clinic in Penticton warmed Huey up with a heating pad and force fed him a whole bunch of formula. He sprung back to life! After that, Huey didn’t stay with his Mama anymore, but he stayed in his own little crate with a hot water bottle, where December could monitor him all the time. He didn’t get a whole lot bigger, but he started to grow stronger.
About two weeks later, Huey almost died again. Everything seemed to be going along fine until one strange night at about 2am, December woke up to find poor Huey, listless again, limp and breathing in shallow gasps. She cupped his tiny, almost lifeless body in her hands for the next few hours, keeping him warm and surrounding him in love. He barely moved, and didn’t respond to anything she did. December thought for sure he wouldn’t make it through the night. Miraculously and mysteriously, at 7am the next morning, Huey sprung to life, perkier and zippier than he ever was before! He ate like there was no tomorrow and started running around the house, wanting to play with any and everything he could find.
After his last near-death experience, Huey really started to grow in size!
He loved to wrestle with his new best friend, Buckets, who was much bigger than him. Huey would often start the fight, but the only way he could finish one was by screaming loudly until December would run over and save him from being pummeled.
Huey never had any more near-death experiences after that. Instead he started to grow up big and strong, and really fill out. His eyes became a brilliant green. He was stunning, and QUITE the little brat!
One day, when Huey was about four-and-a-half months old, December realized, with an ache in her heart, that it was time for him to find his forever home. Right about that time, a lovely couple who had been following Huey’s progress since the very beginning came forward and said they would like to adopt him and give him a happy life. As difficult as it was to let the little angel go, December knew this was the right move for Huey, and he was adopted.
Now Huey has the greatest parents who ever lived, and lives a life of luxury! He also travels twice a year across country in the family camper.
He grew up big and strong and fluffy, and from what I hear he’s STILL quite a naughty little rascal!
